Model Name: Streaming video content over WiMAX and ADSL access networks OPNET Modeler version: 14.5.A PL5 (Build 7545 32-bit) Release date 2008-Jun-11 OPNET Model Library: 14.5.A Release date 2008-Jun-11 WiMAX, also known as a WirelessMAN and more formally as IEEE 802.16, is an evolving set of wireless broadband standards focused on delivering high bandwidth wireless access service to subscribers over the "last mile". Wired broadband access such as xDSL technologies are an expensive venture that also imposes unnecessarily short maximum connection distances to the subscriber, collectively hindering access deployment in many urban and suburban areas. As WiMAX standards advance, it has become a dominant forerunner both in broadband access and point-to-point backhaul solutions. This model simulates bandwidth intensive, delay sensitive, video traffic representative of video streaming, IPTV, and other video-rich emerging applications targeted at fixed and mobile subscribers. These video streams are typically encoded using MPEG-X codecs and while these streams are marginally loss-tolerant, their performance is inherently a function of available link bandwidth and delay characteristics. Consequently, this model examines various performance factors including throughput, packet loss, packet delay, and packet jitter of subscriber stations over a WiMAX access network.
