This lecture corresponds to Chapter 7 in Callister. The material covered in this lecture really only applies to metals. The corresponding material for ceramics comes up in Callister, Chapter 12, and for polymers, Callister Chapter 15.

At this stage in the course, we learn more of how the microstructural details we've been discussing up to now determine the macroscopic properties of the materials.

Some of the slides used in class are just reproductions of figures from the text, so these are not reproduced below.

The assignment for this week is:

Assignment for Week 3, Due Monday, Jan 26

You should read both the assigned chapters, but topics covered on the website associated with the textbook, or with the CD that comes with the 6th edition will not be examined in the mid-term or final exams.

We will determine a date for the final exam during Wednesday's class, please remember to bring your planners to class.
