Academic Programs

Engineering Science students develop skills in systems design along with high levels of scientific knowledge and communications abilities. The program is fast-paced and aimed at training highly skilled engineers.

Two main programs are available for our undergraduates - Engineering Science at the Burnaby Mountain Campus, and Mechatronic Systems Engineering at the Surrey Campus.

Engineering Science Options at the Burnaby Campus

Students in the Bachelor of Applied Science program [BASc and BASc (Honors)] follow the core courses common to all options in the first two years. In third year, students may specialize in one of our available options, or fields of concentrated study.

Most options may be either done as a major or honors degree program. The honors degree requires the completion of a thesis, demonstrating the student’s skill in their chosen engineering discipline.

There is also one minor program that is open to all non-engineering science majors:

Mechatronic Systems Engineering Program at the SFU Surrey Campus

SFU is defining the future of engineering’s freshest and most exciting discipline through its Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE) program. We are one of the first North American schools to offer a Bachelors degree in this emerging area.

MSE is a challenging, multidisciplinary program that integrates the three cornerstones of high-tech engineering – mechanical, electrical and software engineering. Students graduate with practical experience relevant to industries such as the aerospace, automotive, biomedical, manufacturing, robotics and consumer electronics, among others. In both programs, students use computers and computer graphic tools extensively for conceptualization, design and analysis. They have 24-hour access to micro and mainframe computers, engineering work stations, and laboratories.
